Nohora
Nohora A. Arrieta Fernandez is a PhD candidate at Georgetown University and a ACLS/Mellon Dissertation Completion fellow (2020-2021). Her dissertation project, Bittersweet Poetics: Politics and Aesthetics of the Sugar Plantation in Contemporary Brazilian and Caribbean Arts (1990-2018), inquires into works of art about sugar cane plantations produced in Brazil and the Caribbean in the last three decades (1990-2018). Through an interdisciplinary approach and the combination of textual and visual analysis, interviews and archival research, her project studies how, in traditional plantation societies, artistic creation both reshapes and destabilizes discourses on commodities, nation and black citizenship. Nohora is editing and co-translating with Mark Sanders (University of Notre Dame) the poetry of Afro-Colombian poets Romulo Bustos and Pedro Blas Julio. She is a regular collaborator of art magazines as Artishock.
