Assistant Professor, Chapman University
Mateo

Originally from Nicaragua, Mateo Jarquín joined the Department of History at Chapman University after earning his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2019.
His scholarship asks how 20th-century revolutions in the so-called Third World have framed global debates about development, democratization, and international relations. Based on archival and oral history research in several Latin American countries, his current project examines Nicaragua’s Sandinista Revolution (1979-1990) through a transnational lens. Additionally, insights drawn from this research agenda have appeared in written pieces for publications such as Axios, Política Exterior, and the New York Times, and he has provided expert commentary on Central American politics to media outlets including The Economist, BBC Radio, and Al Jazeera English.
