History 1526/Law 2700: European Legal History

Professor: Tamar Herzog - This is a survey course of the history of European law from the fall of the Roman Empire (5th century) to the establishment of the European Union and debates on Human Rights (20th century). Organized chronologically, it engages with the sources and nature of law, the organization of legal systems and the relationship between law and society, law and law-maker, law and the legal professions. During the quarter we will discuss both Continental and Common Law. Lectures would include and be followed by a discussion of primary and secondary sources as specified in the syllabus.
